The title “warehouse worker” says almost nothing about the weight of the goods, the pace, the temperature, or the distance a person walks during a shift.

Which warehouse jobs are available

A warehouse worker may take part in different stages, from receiving goods to sending a completed order to the customer. Roles include order pickers, packers, sorters, scanner operators, quality controllers, returns workers, forklift drivers, and coordinators.

Typical tasks include:

• unloading and checking deliveries;
• placing goods at storage locations;
• picking an order with a scanner or list;
• packing and applying labels;
• sorting parcels by destination;
• checking completeness and damage;
• processing returns;
• building pallets;
• moving goods with warehouse equipment.

Two order-picker vacancies can be completely different. In one, the worker collects small items into a trolley; in another, they carry boxes, work with high racks, or enter a chilled area. Before applying, clarify the type of goods, maximum weight, work-zone temperature, and picking method.

How scanner-based order picking works

The scanner displays the product location, quantity, and next point on the route. The worker finds the correct item, scans the code, confirms the quantity, and places it in a container, trolley, or on a pallet. At some sites, the system operates in Polish, English, or with pictograms.

For example, one order may contain shampoo, a charging cable, and a small household appliance. After each item is scanned, the system displays the next location. An error in the code or quantity immediately changes the picking result, so accuracy is just as important as speed.

An order picker’s shift often includes these steps:

• collect a scanner and log in with a personal code;
• accept the task;
• walk to the storage location;
• scan the bin and the product;
• confirm the quantity;
• send the completed order for packing;
• report a missing or damaged item.

The hardest part is usually not using the scanner but maintaining the pace, walking long routes, and avoiding mistakes. An incorrect item or quantity affects quality, while rushing increases the risk of injury. Before working independently, the employee should receive system and safety training.

Receiving, packing, and dispatch

Receiving staff check quantities, packaging condition, documents, and codes. Work with pallets, hand pallet trucks, and equipment is more common here. A packer, by contrast, prepares an already picked order: selecting a box, adding protective material, sealing, weighing, and applying a label.

Parcel-sorting work depends on the weight and conveyor speed. Find out:

• the maximum parcel size and weight;
• whether it must be lifted without assistance;
• whether there is a conveyor and an adjustable-height table;
• how long the worker stands;
• how often the operation changes;
• who is responsible for damage.

Returns are a separate process. The item must be unpacked, assessed, assigned a reason in the system, and routed to the next destination. This requires more attention and a better understanding of instructions than basic sorting.

Temperature zones and physical workload

A warehouse may be ambient, chilled, frozen, or divided into several temperature zones. Pharmaceutical, food, flower, and vegetable facilities have different storage requirements. Do not rely on a general “typical” range: the temperature of the specific work zone should be stated in the vacancy description.

Four factors determine physical workload:

• the maximum weight of one item;
• the number of lifts per shift;
• the distance of the routes;
• the proportion of work performed standing, bending, or with raised arms.

If a listing says “goods up to 15 kg,” it does not mean that this weight will be lifted only a few times per shift. Likewise, “work in motion” does not reveal the route length. If the employer uses a productivity counter, ask exactly what it measures.

Cold work requires suitable clothing, footwear, gloves, and properly organised breaks. The work pace must not force an employee to ignore safety rules or carry a load they cannot lift safely.

Targets, errors, and bonuses

A warehouse target may be measured in picked lines, units, boxes, pallets, or parcels per hour. A number means nothing without its unit. You also need to know the adaptation period, minimum quality level, and rules for missing stock.

For example, a system may show 120 lines per hour. This does not mean 120 identical boxes: one line may be a nearby small item, while another is a heavy product in a distant zone. Fair assessment accounts for the type of process and route, not only the final number.

A bonus of “up to PLN 1,000” should have written conditions:

• minimum productivity;
• the permitted error rate;
• rules during training;
• the effect of lateness and absence;
• reasons for reducing or losing the bonus;
• the payment date.

For most candidates, it is more important to understand the realistic income without the maximum bonus. If the base rate and guaranteed hours are acceptable on their own, the bonus remains extra pay rather than a condition without which the vacancy makes no sense.

Pay and guaranteed hours

From 1 January 2026, Poland’s minimum wage is PLN 4,806 gross per month for full-time work under an employment contract. The minimum hourly rate for specified civil-law contracts is PLN 31.40 gross.

To compare warehouses, you need:

• the gross or net rate;
• guaranteed hours;
• night, weekend, and overtime premiums;
• bonus rules;
• accommodation, transport, and other deductions.

A vacancy paying PLN 34 gross with 160 guaranteed hours gives PLN 5,440 gross. At PLN 31 gross for 200 hours, earnings are PLN 6,200 gross. A higher hourly rate does not always mean higher monthly earnings.

“Up to 240 hours” is a possible maximum, not a guarantee. Base your calculation on the number written in the contract. Do not compare gross with net pay or add the maximum bonus to guaranteed income.

Schedules, night shifts, and breaks

Warehouses use 5/2 and 6/1 patterns, two or three shifts, and 8-, 10-, or 12-hour workdays. Under the standard employment-contract rule, working time does not exceed 8 hours per day and averages 40 hours per week in an average five-day week. Other lawful time-accounting systems may provide for extended shifts.

The vacancy should state:

• the exact start and finish times;
• the rotation pattern;
• the duration and payment of breaks;
• the number of night shifts;
• weekend work;
• guaranteed monthly hours;
• how overtime is compensated.

A night shift matters for more than the premium. Find out in advance how you will get home after work. If the warehouse is in an industrial zone or neighbouring municipality, public transport may not match the schedule.

Forklifts and UDT certification

Operating specified types of warehouse equipment requires the relevant UDT qualifications. The listing should name the equipment type: front, side-loading, high-bay, or another forklift. A general phrase such as “forklift operator” is not enough.

Before the first shift, find out:

• which document the employer recognises;
• whether Polish certification is required;
• who organises the training and exam;
• who pays for the procedure;
• what the worker does before obtaining certification;
• whether scanning and paperwork are included in the duties.

Do not operate equipment without valid certification and training. A promise to “arrange it later” does not authorise anyone to drive on the first day.

Accommodation and commuting

Warehouse complexes are often located near motorways rather than in city centres. Check the gatehouse address, not only the name of Warsaw, Poznań, Łódź, or another city in the listing.

Accommodation conditions should include:

• the exact address;
• the number of people per room;
• rent and utility charges;
• the deposit and refund rules;
• commuting time and cost;
• payment for the days before the first shift;
• eviction terms after changing vacancies.

How to check a warehouse vacancy

Before accepting a vacancy, make sure you know the employer’s or agency’s name, warehouse address, type of goods, operation, maximum weight, temperature, target, contract type, rate, guaranteed hours, schedule, accommodation, and transport.

Red flags include:

• no address or actual employer;
• duties described only as “easy work”;
• no type of goods or weight;
• a maximum salary without guaranteed hours;
• gross and net amounts mixed together;
• a bonus without rules;
• an advance payment requested for a vacancy without a contract;
• a recruiter who cannot explain the temperature or route.

If the contract is with an agency, ask for the warehouse name and the company that pays the wages. Also ensure that the lawful basis for employment and the document required before the first shift are defined in advance.
