Work in Germany is attractive because of the higher rates, but the figure in an advertisement does not yet show the actual income. Before applying, candidates should compare the hourly or monthly pay, whether it is gross or net, guaranteed hours, accommodation, transport, and the legal basis for employment.

As of 25 July 2026, the WORKIUM catalogue included vacancies at an electronic-devices warehouse, in construction, and in elderly care. They differed substantially in pay, schedules, requirements, and accommodation. There is therefore no single «average salary» that applies to all vacancies: specific conditions should be compared using the same format.

From 1 January 2026, the statutory minimum wage in Germany is 13.90 € gross per hour. Gross means pay before taxes and social-security contributions; net means the amount after deductions. Net and gross amounts cannot be compared directly without an individual calculation.

Which vacancies are available in Germany

The catalogue may include work in warehouses, manufacturing, construction, care, logistics, and service occupations. Availability depends on more than experience: an employer may set requirements for language skills, qualifications, physical workload, a driving licence, or willingness to work shifts.

For many entry-level vacancies, employers primarily assess attentiveness, stamina, and willingness to learn the process on site. For example, the electronic-devices warehouse in the WORKIUM catalogue involved loading, order picking, stocktaking, handling complaints and returns, packing, and unloading. This is not one simple operation, so candidates should assess the full list of duties rather than focusing only on the word «warehouse».

The construction vacancy in Berlin included installing plasterboard structures, laying tiles, cladding, masonry, and preparing surfaces. In this case, experience and the quality of the work have a much greater effect on a candidate's suitability than in positions that provide training on site.

Elderly care is a different type of work: assisting with hygiene, dressing, meals, medication, cleaning, and accompanying the person to appointments. If a candidate is specifically looking for care, warehouse work, or construction, these represent separate occupational intents. What current WORKIUM vacancies show

At the time of review, the catalogue contained three vacancy examples.

Electronic-devices warehouse, Euskirchen:

• 2,600–3,000 € gross per month;

• free accommodation;

• a WORKIUM bonus of 100 € after 30 working days.

Elderly care, Marburg:

• 1,800–1,900 € net per month;

• 7–9 € net per hour;

• women aged 18–65;

• a shift-based schedule;

• free accommodation;

• a WORKIUM bonus of 70 € after 30 working days.

These amounts do not form an «average salary in Germany». They relate to different occupations and are even stated in different formats: the warehouse vacancy uses gross pay, while construction and care use net pay. The bonus is also not part of the regular rate: it is paid once after the stated condition is met.

When checking a vacancy, pay attention to the details in the listing: location, duties, rate, whether the amount is gross or net, schedule, accommodation, candidate requirements, and bonus conditions. If the monthly range does not match a simple calculation of the hourly rate multiplied by the expected hours, ask which supplements, night shifts, or overtime hours are included in the amount.

How to compare gross and net pay

The most common mistake is to place 15 € gross next to 13 € net and assume that the difference is only 2 €. In reality, gross pay in Germany is subject to taxes and contributions for health insurance, pension insurance, long-term care insurance, and unemployment insurance. The actual net amount depends on the tax class and personal circumstances.

For the warehouse vacancy, the calculation at a rate of 14.96 € gross looks like this:

• 14.96 € × 160 hours = 2,393.60 € gross;

• 14.96 € × 180 hours = 2,692.80 € gross;

• after subtracting accommodation of 380–400 €, 1,993.60–2,312.80 € gross before taxes and contributions remains.

The listing also states 2,600–3,000 € gross per month. The candidate should therefore ask how many hours the agreement guarantees and whether the range includes Saturdays, supplements, or overtime shifts.

For the construction vacancy, 13 € net × 200 hours gives an arithmetic result of 2,600 € net, while the listing states 2,800–3,000 € net. Additional hours or supplements may account for the difference, but this should be confirmed in writing. The upper limit should not be assumed to be guaranteed.

For elderly care, the hourly rate of 7–9 € net does not fully explain the monthly amount of 1,800–1,900 €, because the shift-based arrangement may include presence time, active working hours, and breaks. Ask which hours are paid, how many are guaranteed, and whether there are night-time call-outs.

To compare vacancies correctly:

1. convert all amounts to the same format — gross or estimated net;

2. use only the hours guaranteed by the agreement;

3. add guaranteed supplements;

4. subtract accommodation, transport, and other regular deductions;

5. calculate bonuses separately from monthly income.

Schedules, hours, and the employment agreement

A written agreement is standard for employment in Germany. It should state the employer and employee, start date, duration, probationary period, workplace, position and duties, salary, working hours, holiday entitlement, and the procedure for ending the employment relationship.

A Mon–Fri or Mon–Sat label does not show the length of the shift.

Before departure, clarify:

• how many weekly hours are stated in the agreement;

• how many hours are guaranteed per month;

• the start and finish times of each shift;

• the length of breaks and whether they are paid;

• the rules for night, Saturday, and public-holiday shifts;

• the rate and approval procedure for overtime;

• how working time is recorded.

For example, an advertisement promises 2,600–3,000 € per month and a Mon–Sat schedule, but the agreement contains only an hourly rate without guaranteed hours. In a quieter month, actual pay may be lower than expected. Ask for the contractual hours or a minimum guaranteed amount to be stated.

Do not accept a verbal replacement of the conditions after arrival. If the city, employer, rate, accommodation, or schedule changes, request a new written document before starting work.

Accommodation and transport to work

The phrase «accommodation is provided» does not automatically mean that it is free. In the WORKIUM warehouse vacancy, accommodation cost 380–400 € per month, while it was free in the construction and care offers. However, even zero rent does not answer questions about a deposit, utility charges, the number of people in the room, or the journey to work.

Before reserving the vacancy, request:

• the exact address or district;

• photographs of the room, kitchen, and bathroom;

• the number of people in the room and flat;

• the full monthly cost;

• information about the deposit and refund procedure;

• the move-out rules after employment ends;

• the distance and travel time;

• the cost of company or public transport.

If the warehouse pays 2,600 € gross and accommodation costs 400 €, do not describe the budget as «2,200 € remains». This is still an amount before taxes and contributions. An individual net estimate is needed first, and only then should the accommodation cost be deducted.

In care work, free accommodation is often linked to the place where the work is performed. Clarify whether there is a private room, guaranteed rest time, who replaces the worker on days off, and which activities are included in the duties. Living in the care recipient's home does not remove the need for a clear schedule.

Whether German is required

Language requirements depend on the job. In a warehouse or factory, some processes can be learned during training, but the employee must understand safety rules, instructions from the supervisor, and emergency procedures. Language skills are more important in care work because the role involves communication, explaining needs, and accompanying the person to medical appointments.

If the advertisement states «no language knowledge required», clarify:

• which language is used for training;

• whether an English-speaking coordinator is available;

• who translates the agreement;

• which language the employee uses to communicate with the supervisor;

• whether a certain level of German is required after the probationary period.

A vacancy without a language requirement does not mean that language will not be needed in daily life. The accommodation address, transport, doctors, banks, and public authorities remain part of the move. For the first month, it is useful to prepare basic phrases related to safety, schedules, pay, and accommodation.

How to check a vacancy before departure

Before purchasing a ticket, request all key conditions in writing:

1. the employer's full name and address;

2. the place where the work will be performed;

3. the job title and exact duties;

4. the rate marked as gross or net;

5. guaranteed hours;

6. the schedule, breaks, and supplements;

7. the cost and address of the accommodation;

8. transport to work;

9. the document confirming the legal basis for employment;

10. the contact details of the responsible person after arrival.

Separately compare the hourly and monthly amounts. If 160 guaranteed hours do not produce the stated minimum monthly income, request a written calculation. If free accommodation is promised but a deposit is requested to a private individual's account without an agreement and address, do not pay until the arrangement has been verified.

Compare vacancies using the same criteria: duties, rate, gross or net format, schedule, accommodation, candidate requirements, and bonus. The best vacancy is not the one with the largest figure, but the one where it is clear what will be paid, when it will be paid, and under which conditions.
