Work in Gdynia differs from most Polish city pages because of the port and maritime economy. Candidates can look not only for warehouse or service-sector vacancies but also for work connected with terminals, cargo handling, ship repair, transport, and technical maintenance.

At the same time, the word «port» in a job title does not explain the workplace location. The company may be situated in a restricted port zone, near a logistics centre, or in another part of the Tricity area. Before applying, clarify the exact address, access-pass requirements, shift start time, and route.

What jobs are available in Gdynia

In 2025, the Port of Gdynia handled 25.7 million tonnes of cargo and exceeded 1 million TEU of container traffic for the first time. This shows the scale of the logistics infrastructure, but it does not mean that every local vacancy is directly connected with the port.

Possible sectors include:

• port and terminal operations;

• warehouse logistics and order picking;

• operation of forklifts or other terminal equipment;

• ship repair, welding, electrical work, and mechanics;

• inspection of cargo and accompanying documents;

• cleaning of production and office premises;

• hotels, food service, retail, and customer service.

A vacancy for a «terminal worker» may involve different duties: securing cargo, sorting, scanning, outdoor work, or operating equipment. Ask for a detailed description of how the shift is organised and clarify which certificates, medical examinations, or training are required.

What working in the port means

Port areas have access and safety rules that do not apply to an ordinary warehouse. Some workplaces may require an access pass, special training, protective clothing, confirmed qualifications, or medical clearance for work at height or near machinery.

Before accepting a vacancy, ask:

• who arranges the access pass and how long it takes;

• whether compulsory training is paid;

• who provides protective clothing and footwear;

• whether the work is performed indoors or outdoors;

• whether there is exposure to dust, noise, cold, or cargo-handling equipment;

• which certificate is required for a forklift, crane, or other equipment.

If an employer promises «port work without experience», ask for the specific operation to be named. A person without experience may begin with some auxiliary tasks, but hazardous work and equipment operation should not be performed without the required training.

Requirements depend on the position. Warehouse equipment may require UDT authorisation, drivers may need the relevant licence category, while office logistics may require experience with documents and Polish or English-language skills. Requirements from one vacancy should not be assumed to apply to every employer in the port.

Salary and calculation of actual income

From 1 January 2026, the minimum salary under an employment contract in Poland is 4,806 PLN gross per month. The minimum hourly rate for certain civil-law contracts is 31.40 PLN gross per hour. This is the nationwide minimum, not the average rate for the port or Gdynia.

For an hourly offer, calculate:

rate × guaranteed paid hours + supplements confirmed in writing − accommodation − transport − other deductions.

Illustrative example: 31.40 PLN gross × 184 paid hours = 5,777.60 PLN gross before taxes and deductions. The actual amount depends on the agreement, tax status, night shifts, overtime, and absences.

Port and warehouse advertisements may separately mention attendance, productivity, or shift-related bonuses. Ask for the conditions of each supplement to be explained in writing: the wording «bonus up to 1,000 PLN» does not mean a guaranteed payment.

Schedule, night shifts, and authorisations

Port operations and logistics may operate around the clock. Find out exactly how the two- or three-shift system is organised: clarify the exact start times, rotation pattern, break duration, and number of guaranteed shifts per month.

The number of vacancies may rise or fall at different times of the year because of terminal workloads, logistics-company orders, and the season in the hotel and restaurant sector. The type of employment — permanent, temporary, or seasonal — should therefore be checked in every advertisement.

Also check:

• how night hours are paid;

• whether overtime shifts are voluntary;

• whether time spent passing security checks and changing clothes is included in working time;

• what happens to the shift if a vessel or cargo is delayed;

• whether weekend availability is required.

For example, a 12-hour shift does not equal 12 paid hours if the employer deducts unpaid breaks. Ask how much time will be counted as paid working time.

Travel in Gdynia and the Tricity area

Gdynia forms part of the Tricity area together with Gdańsk and Sopot, but these are not one address. A vacancy labelled «Gdańsk–Gdynia–Sopot» may involve work in another city or changing locations. Ask for the permanent workplace to be stated in the agreement.

For the port zone, it is important to check not only the route to the gate but also the distance from the entrance checkpoint to the actual workplace. Internal transport or a walk within the site may add time that is not shown in the general route.

Before applying, find out:

• whether public transport operates before the early shift starts;

• whether it is possible to return after a night shift;

• where exactly the employer's bus stops;

• whether transport is paid for;

• whether the accommodation is in Gdynia, Gdańsk, or another town.

How to check a vacancy before applying

Start with five points: who will be your employer under the agreement, the exact address, duties, contract type, and guaranteed hours. Then check whether the rate is gross or net, the supplements, schedule, and all deductions.

If the vacancy is offered by an agency, check who will be a party to the agreement and who will actually supervise the work at the terminal or company. The agency, employer, and terminal operator may be different companies — this should be understood before signing.

Do not pay money solely for a promise of a vacancy, an access pass, or a «place reservation» without an agreement and a clear basis for the payment. Do not hand over your original passport to an unauthorised person.
