Work in Prague is not defined only by the job title and a rate in Czech koruna. Within one city, two vacancies may differ significantly in their address, journey time, schedule, guaranteed hours, supplements, and actual duties.

Prague has an extensive public transport network, but this does not mean that every route is equally convenient. What matters is not the distance on the map, but the route at the actual shift start and finish times. A vacancy with a higher rate may be less advantageous if it requires several transfers every day or an expensive journey beyond the city.

Which vacancies are available in Prague

Vacancies may appear in Prague and nearby towns in warehouses, logistics, manufacturing, hotels, food-service businesses, cleaning, retail, and customer services. The range changes according to employers' needs, so candidates should focus on current offers rather than a general list of occupations.

The job title does not always reveal what the working day involves. A «warehouse worker» may pick orders with a scanner, sort returns, pack goods, or move boxes. A «production operator» may check quality, assemble parts, or operate a specific section of a production line.

Before applying, obtain answers to five questions:

• which operations are performed during the shift;

• how much weight must be lifted and how often;

• whether the work is mainly standing, seated, or mixed;

• whether there is a target and which units are used;

• how many shifts the training lasts.

Example. The phrase «packing lightweight goods» does not show the pace. If one operation must be repeated every 20 seconds, that is up to 180 cycles per hour. This calculation is not the target for a specific vacancy, but it shows why the frequency of movement matters as much as the weight of the goods.

How the address affects the choice of work

The words «work in Prague» do not guarantee that the company is located in the city centre or near a metro station. The workplace may be on the outskirts, in an industrial zone, or beyond Prague's administrative boundaries.

Vacancies may be located in different districts of Prague or near the city. In many cases, a route through Prague includes the metro, tram, or bus, but the actual timetable must be checked for early and night shifts.

Before accepting a vacancy, obtain:

• the full workplace address;

• the accommodation address, if housing is arranged;

• the pick-up point for company transport;

• the start and finish time of each shift;

• the return arrangements after a delay or overtime.

Plan the route separately for the morning, day, and night shifts. A daytime journey does not prove that the same route can be used to reach work by 6:00 or return after 22:00.

Example. During the day, the journey takes 45 minutes, but the first service on the final section arrives after the morning shift begins. The candidate therefore needs a company bus, different accommodation, or a different schedule.

WORKIUM recommends assessing a route using two indicators: journey time and the number of transfers. One direct 55-minute journey is often more predictable than a shorter route involving three transfers.

How to check the schedule and commute

A 5/2 or 6/1 schedule does not show the shift length, breaks, rotation, or night work. Request an example of an actual working week with the exact start and finish time of each shift.

In the Czech Republic, standard working time is 40 hours per week. The statutory limit is 38.75 hours for a two-shift system and 37.5 hours for a three-shift or continuous system. One shift should not exceed 12 hours. These rules do not mean that every vacancy has the same schedule.

Check:

• whether the schedule is fixed or rotating;

• whether there are night shifts;

• how many hours are guaranteed by the agreement;

• how working time is recorded;

• how long the breaks last;

• how work above the standard hours is paid;

• whether training counts as paid time.

Daily calculation. A shift from 6:00 to 18:00 lasts 12 hours. If the journey takes 50 minutes each way, the employee spends around 13 hours and 40 minutes away from home, excluding waiting time for transport.

It is therefore worth comparing not only the monthly salary but also the total amount of time the vacancy takes each day. This is particularly important when the workplace and accommodation are in different parts of the city.

How to compare pay and hours

From 1 January to 31 December 2026, the minimum wage in the Czech Republic for a standard 40-hour week is 22,400 CZK gross per month or 134.40 CZK gross per hour. This is the statutory minimum, not the typical salary for every vacancy in Prague.

Compare gross with gross or net with net. If one vacancy shows an amount before tax and another shows an amount after tax, a direct comparison is misleading.

For an initial comparison, use the formula:

rate × guaranteed hours + guaranteed supplements − deductions confirmed in writing.

Illustrative example. 170 CZK gross × 160 guaranteed hours = 27,200 CZK gross before supplements. For 200 hours, the arithmetic result is 34,000 CZK, but the additional 40 hours cannot be treated as guaranteed unless they are confirmed by the schedule and agreement.

Night work in the Czech Republic is subject to a supplement of at least 10% of average earnings; work on Saturday and Sunday also carries a supplement of at least 10%. For overtime, the employee receives ordinary pay plus a supplement of at least 25%, unless the parties agree on compensatory time off. Specific conditions may be more favourable.

Do not add a bonus of «up to 3,000 CZK» to guaranteed income until the employer explains the criteria: attendance, productivity, quality, absence of lateness, or meeting the target.

When checking vacancies, the WORKIUM team looks at whether the rate is marked as gross or net, whether the guaranteed amount is separated from the maximum possible amount, and whether the bonus conditions are stated. These are the phrases most likely to cause candidates to misjudge their future income.

What the agreement should contain

An employment agreement in the Czech Republic must be in writing. The employee should receive their own copy before starting work.

Compare the agreement with the vacancy using the following fields:

1. the employer's name;

2. the type of work;

3. the workplace;

4. the start date;

5. the rate and whether it is gross or net;

6. working time;

7. agreed deductions.

Check the wording of the workplace particularly carefully. If the advertisement states Prague but the agreement allows the employee to be assigned to different sites, request an explanation of the actual address and the procedure for changing it.

Typical risk situation. A candidate accepts work in one district but receives a different address with a longer route before the first shift. If the workplace changes, the new condition should be obtained in writing before starting.

Do not hand over the original passport to an unauthorised person or pay money only for the promise of a vacancy. The company name, manager's contact details, payment conditions, and address should be checked before travelling.

How to assess a vacancy before applying

To compare two offers without confusion, record the same set of information:

• Work: daily operations, weight, target;

• Address: exact location and district;

• Schedule: start, finish, night shifts;

• Hours: guaranteed and possible additional hours;

• Pay: gross or net rate;

• Supplements: night, weekend, overtime;

• Expenses: transport and other deductions;

• Agreement: employer, type of work, and workplace.

Then check the route for the actual shift time and calculate the guaranteed income. If one field is missing, mark it as unconfirmed and do not insert unverified information.

Comparison example. Vacancy A has a rate of 175 CZK and 160 guaranteed hours but requires a 70-minute journey. Vacancy B offers 168 CZK, 180 guaranteed hours, and a direct company bus. The final choice should be made after calculating income, expenses, and the total time away from home, rather than choosing the highest rate in the headline.
