How to combine two schedules with childcare

Start by planning the week using exact times rather than the labels “day shift” or “night shift.” For every day, record:

• the start and end of the first partner’s shift;
• the start and end of the second partner’s shift;
• travel time in both directions;
• the opening hours of the childcare centre or school;
• who collects the child;
• who stays at home during holidays or illness.

Example: one parent works from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the other from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and each journey takes 40 minutes. Do not calculate the budget using only two salaries. Add costs that may not appear in a childless couple’s plan:

• the deposit;
• food;
• transport for three or more family members;

• a reserve until the first payment;
• unexpected expenses.

These are not average Polish prices but an example of the calculation; use your own confirmed amounts.

Several weeks may pass before the first salary. The reserve should cover accommodation, food, transport, and the child’s needs without relying on an advance unless it has been confirmed.

What to check in the vacancy

Check the schedule, working conditions, and accommodation option in the vacancy description. The “couples” label applies to employees and does not automatically confirm that a child may move in.

Separately check whether the accommodation, childcare, and daily journey make the conditions suitable for a family with a child. If even one of these points is unknown, it is better not to set the moving date.

What backup plan the family needs

Even an agreed schedule may change because of production needs, training, or a transfer. Before moving, decide who will:

• stay with the child during an illness;
• collect the child if a shift runs late;
• look for different accommodation if the child is not allowed to move in;
• temporarily work fewer hours;
• support the family until the second salary arrives.

If one partner starts work later, calculate the budget using one salary. If both parents have night shifts, another adult or a different reliable childcare arrangement is needed.
