On a livestock farm, work is tied to a daily cycle, not just a standard office schedule. Animals need to be fed, checked and serviced regardless of weekends or holidays, so shifts can start early and rotate between workers.

A typical process may include:

• changing clothes and sanitary preparation;
• inspection of the section and checking the condition of the animals;
• distributing feed and water;
• cleaning aisles, stalls or cages;
• changing bedding;
• washing equipment and supplies;
• assisting with animal movement;
• recording or transmitting information about the condition of the livestock.

The phrase “animal care” is too general. Before applying, you need to know the type of animals, their number in the section, the method of feeding, the proportion of manual labor, the maximum weight of bags or equipment, and whether there is contact with veterinary procedures.

Many operations can be learned without experience, but the employer must explain safe behavior around animals. The candidate should not independently perform unfamiliar procedures just because the vacancy says “everything will be taught”.

What a shift looks like on a dairy farm

A dairy farm operates around a milking schedule. Depending on the equipment, the worker may be driving cows into the milking parlor, cleaning udders, connecting machines, monitoring the process, disconnecting equipment, and cleaning the system after completion.

Specific tasks:

• preparing the milking parlor;
• moving cows between sections;
• ensuring that machines are properly connected;
• monitoring milk and animal behavior;
• washing floors and equipment;
• feeding calves;
• cleaning stalls;
• reporting an injury or signs of illness to the responsible person.

Before the first shift, clarify how many milking cycles occur per day, what the start time is, whether the shift is divided into two parts, and who trains the equipment. If the shift starts before public transport starts, you need to know in advance how to get there.

Conditions on a poultry farm and a pig farm

On a poultry farm and a pig farm, it is important for a candidate to assess not only the weight of the loads. Well-being is affected by odor, dust, humidity, noise, temperature, sanitary restrictions and repetitive movements.

On a poultry farm, they may be assigned to:

• control feed and water;
• inspect sections;
• sort or move poultry;
• collect eggs, if it is an egg farm;
• clean and disinfect the premises;
• monitor ventilation and equipment.

On a pig farm, feeding, washing sections, replacing bedding, driving animals and controlling automatic systems are possible. Without an accurate description, it is impossible to conclude that one of these vacancies is easier.

On a poultry farm, the sanitary regime may include changing clothes, disinfecting shoes, and restricting transitions between sections. It is important to clarify this before the first shift: a violation of biosecurity concerns not only the employee's discipline, but also the health of the entire livestock.

If the candidate has asthma, severe allergies, respiratory or musculoskeletal problems, the conditions must be assessed before departure. Working as a tractor driver and with equipment

Working as a tractor driver requires separate detailed consideration, so only a brief overview is provided below. This is not a vacancy "without experience": in the offer it is advisable to immediately indicate the model of equipment, type of work, the required category of certificate and the method of confirming qualifications.

• preparing the tractor for a shift;
• checking the oil, fuel and visible damage;
• transporting feed or materials;
• working with a trailer;
• loading and unloading;
• field maintenance;
• cleaning the equipment after work;
• reporting faults.

A practical risk arises when the advertisement only states “tractor experience” but does not specify the model, attachments and legal requirements. Several years of operation on one type of machine does not automatically mean readiness for another type of machine.

Schedule, workload and safety

According to the employment contract, the basic norm in Poland is 8 hours per day and an average of 40 hours per week in an average five-day workweek within the calculation period. A different actual schedule may apply depending on the working time system, but it must be properly drawn up and recorded.

For farm work, it is especially important to know:

• the exact start and end of the shift;
• breaks;
• the alternation of morning and evening shifts;
• work on weekends;
• the method of recording hours;
• overtime pay;
• transport at irregular times;
• work clothes, shoes, gloves and respiratory protection.

The phrase “8–12 hours” without a schedule is not enough. You need to understand whether the long shift is provided for in the working time system, whether there are breaks, how many days in a row the candidate works, and how the extra hours are compensated.

It’s not just animals that pose a danger on a farm. Slippery floors, moving machinery, chemicals, enclosed spaces, and improper lifting of loads require separate instruction. Work gloves are no substitute for training.

Pay, contracts, and seasonal employment

As of 1 January 2026, the minimum wage for full-time work in Poland is PLN 4,806 gross per month. The minimum hourly rate for certain civil law contracts, in particular umowa zlecenie, is PLN 31.40 gross per hour.

These two figures should not be mixed:

• PLN 4,806 gross per month applies to full-time employment under an employment contract;
• PLN 31.40 gross per hour applies to certain contracts of mandate or service contracts;
• net depends on the contract, taxes, contributions and status of the employee.

Agricultural work can be permanent or seasonal. For third-country nationals, seasonal work in certain types of agriculture requires an appropriate legal basis if the person does not have free access to the labour market or other exemption. A seasonal permit may not cover more than 9 months in a calendar year.

The employer applies for a seasonal permit, and the contract must contain conditions that comply with the formalities. Holding a passport or having visa-free entry does not in itself explain the right to perform a specific job.

When comparing offers, the following are required:

• gross or net rate;
• type of contract;
• guaranteed number of hours;
• date of payment;
• bonus rules;
• accommodation and transport allowance;
• cost of medical examination or work clothes;
• legal basis for work.

If the employer only states the maximum monthly income, ask for a calculation without bonuses and overtime.

Housing and location of the farm

Farms are often located outside large cities. The address of the nearest city in the advertisement does not indicate the actual distance to the farm, shop, doctor or bus stop.

Before moving in, you should know:

• exact address;
• full monthly fee;
• utility bills;
• deposit;
• number of people in the room;
• kitchen, bathroom and washing machine;
• transportation to work;
• travel time;
• accommodation rules after the contract ends.

Living “on the farm” can shorten the journey, but it also ties the accommodation to the employer. You need to know when the person must leave after the termination of employment and whether the deposit is refundable.

How to check the vacancy

Start with the exact work process, not an eye-catching number, but with the exact name of the process. “Farm” should turn into a clear description of the working day.

Before agreeing to the offer, write down:

• the name and address of the employer;
• the type of farm;
• specific responsibilities;
• the amount of manual and mechanized work;
• the schedule and accounting of hours;
• type of contract;
• gross or net rate;
• all allowances;
• housing and transportation;
• documents and legal basis for work;
• training and protection;
• contact person responsible.

Do not transfer money to a private individual just for the promise of “reserving a place”. Check the company, written contract, work address and refund conditions if any service is actually paid.
