Jobs in Germany for couples are not simply vacancies where two applications can be submitted. Before travelling, confirm two positions, the role and pay rate for each partner, work schedules, accommodation conditions, and how both people will get to the workplace.

A note saying “couples accepted” does not guarantee identical roles or the same shift. One partner may work in a warehouse while the other works in packing or quality control. This is why the conditions should be checked separately for each partner and the budget calculated for two people. Legal requirements are current as of August 19, 2026.

What a vacancy for a couple means

A vacancy for a couple means that the employer is prepared to consider two candidates at the same time. However, the actual working conditions may differ:

• two identical roles at one workplace;
• different roles at the same site;
• the same or different shifts;
• shared placement without a guarantee of a private room;
• work in the same region but at different addresses.

An official marriage certificate is not always required. What matters more is that the employer confirms the job and terms for each candidate in writing. If only one position is confirmed, the other partner does not yet have a guaranteed job.

Practical example. The advert says “for a couple”, but only one packing position remains on the arrival date. The second partner is promised another site “after registration”. Before buying tickets, obtain the name of the second company, the role, pay rate, and starting date.

How to verify two jobs

One vacancy listing for a couple is not enough. Ask for the following details to be confirmed separately for each partner:

• the candidate’s name;
• the employer’s name and workplace address;
• the role and main duties;
• the gross hourly rate;
• the guaranteed or expected number of hours;
• the start date;
• the shift and days off;
• accommodation and transport arrangements.

At WORKIUM, we recommend checking not only that both partners are employed, but also whether they can start at the same time. If one partner starts on Monday and the other position is expected two weeks later, the first month’s budget will be different.

Also agree on a plan in case one candidate does not pass a medical examination, test, or document check. You need to know whether an alternative position will be offered and whether the accommodation booking for two people will remain valid.

The chances of both partners finding work are higher if they are willing to consider different processes at the same company and do not insist on completely identical roles. However, do not accept “we will find something for the second person after arrival”: both positions should be known before departure.

Clarify whether both partners must arrive on the same day or may arrive a few days apart. This affects check-in, transfer arrangements, and each person’s starting date.

If one partner cannot start work, this should not automatically affect the other person’s contract. Discuss this situation together with the accommodation terms, because the room price or the right to remain in the accommodation may change.

One shift or different schedules

Working at the same company does not guarantee the same schedule. One partner may work from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. while the other works from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Even at the same workplace, partners may barely see each other because of different shifts, and transport must be checked for both schedules.

In Germany, the standard working day is up to 8 hours. It may be extended to 10 hours if the average returns to 8 hours within the legally defined period. A working day of more than 6 hours requires a break of at least 30 minutes; more than 9 hours requires 45 minutes. There should normally be at least 11 hours of rest between shifts.

Before accepting the vacancy, check:

• each partner’s shift start and finish times;
• whether the days off coincide;
• whether moving to the same shift later is possible;
• whether transport operates at the required times;
• what happens if the company changes the work schedule.

Scenario to check. If the company bus departs only once before the morning shift, it does not solve the transport issue for the partner working in the evening.

How to calculate joint income

Do not simply multiply the advertised salary by two. Record the pay rate, guaranteed hours, bonuses, and deductions separately for each partner, then add the results together.

In 2026, Germany’s statutory minimum wage is €13.90 gross per hour. This is the minimum before taxes and contributions, not take-home pay.

Example calculation.

• partner A: €14.50 × 168 hours = €2,436 gross;
• partner B: €14.00 × 160 hours = €2,240 gross;
• total: €4,676 gross before taxes, contributions, and other deductions.

If the advert says “up to €3,000”, ask for the base rate, guaranteed hours, night-shift supplements, and bonuses to be shown separately. The maximum amount is not guaranteed income.

Include the following separately in the budget:

• accommodation charged per room or per person;
• transport for two people;
• the deposit;
• food;
• expenses until the first salary;
• a possible period when one partner is not working.

Accommodation for a couple: what to confirm

“Accommodation provided” does not necessarily mean a private room for the couple or free housing. Ask for written confirmation of:

• whether the couple will live in one room;
• how many people live in the flat or house;
• the price per person or per room;
• utilities and the deposit;
• the distance to the workplace;
• what happens to the accommodation if one partner changes jobs.

Example. If accommodation costs €400 per person, the couple pays €800 per month. If €600 is charged per room, the joint cost is €600. If the advert merely says “accommodation €400–600” without explaining whether this is per room or per person, the real cost cannot be calculated.

Two contracts and separate terms

Each partner should receive a separate employment contract. Even if the roles, pay rate, and schedule are identical, wages, hours, leave, and responsibility are recorded separately.

Check each contract for:

• the employer’s legal name;
• the place of work;
• the role and duties;
• the gross pay rate;
• working hours;
• the probationary period, if applicable;
• how supplements are calculated;
• payment dates;
• termination conditions.

Do not accept a promise to arrange the second partner’s employment after arrival. If the terms differ, compare them before travelling.

Which jobs may suit both partners

Couples may find suitable vacancies in warehousing, packing, order picking, manufacturing, quality control, cleaning, or service. Identical roles are not essential: the duties should match each person’s abilities, and the employer should confirm work for both.

For example, one partner may pick orders with a scanner while the other packs and labels products. If both are willing to perform different processes at the same workplace, they may have more options.

Before applying, check these ten important questions:

• Are two positions confirmed for the same date?
• What is each partner’s role?
• What are the gross rate and guaranteed hours for each person?
• Do the shifts and days off coincide?
• Has one room been confirmed?
• How much does accommodation cost for two?
• How will each person get to work?
• Are there two separate contracts?
• What happens if one position is cancelled?
• Which expenses must be covered before the first salary?

If even one key question has no clear answer, do not base the joint budget on the maximum salary and verbal promises.
